Chilean International Cooperation Agency (AGCI) – Nelson Mandela Scholarships for 2018: Deadline – 31 October 2017

The Chilean International Cooperation Agency (AGCI) is offering scholarships for accredited Master’s degree studies, taught in Spanish, at Chilean universities and higher education institutions, for the 2018 academic year, beginning in March 2018.

Who can apply?

Applications submitted by public officials or academic officials at officially recognized universities in South Africa will be given priority.

Classes and/or the Spanish course shall begin on or after the first week of March 2018, so selected candidates must be available to travel to Chile for these dates.
Fields of Study

Astronomy, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Energy, Management of Public Policies, Health, Environment, and Mining, (see Annex 1 for a full list).

What the scholarship offers

The scholarship provides benefits that are limited to the following items:
i. An Immersion Spanish Language Course that may last for one (1) academic semester in advance of or in parallel with the start of the corresponding Master’s Program. (Applicants who are certified in the Spanish language need not take this course).

ii. Payment of return air fares between the capital of their country of origin and their destination city on arrival in Chile (applicants must finance their own stays in the city of Santiago, Chile, to undertake paperwork procedures with AGCI) and back to the capital of the country of origin on completing their studies.

iii. Payment of matriculation, tuition, and graduation fees charged by the corresponding higher education institution, for the duration of the postgraduate program, with a limit of four (4) academic semesters or six (6) academic quarters, depending on the calendar used by the corresponding institution (up to a maximum of twenty-four (24) months). In any case, all costs that correspond exclusively to the academic curriculum of the study program for which the scholarship is granted must be included.

iv. Payment of a monthly maintenance stipend of five hundred thousand Chilean pesos (CLP 500,000) for the duration of the scholarship period. Said stipend shall be paid for the duration of the program, up to a limit of twenty-four (24) months. v. AGCI will only pay scholarship holders 100% of the monthly stipend for the months of December, January, and/or February if they remain in Chile for more than half of the corresponding month. In any other case, AGCI will pay only 50% of the value of the stipend (months of December, January, and February). vi. For the duration of the scholarship, coverage for the holder with life, health, and accident insurance for events that affect them and occur within Chile territory. They will also be provided with a Collaboration Convention with the Public Health Social Security System (FONASA), and shall be entitled to care through the Chilean Public Health System and Services, from the time when they are issued with a national identity card by the Chilean Civil Registration Service.

vii. Scholarship holders will be granted a single payment amounting to ninety thousand pesos (CLP 90,000) for study materials and textbooks, paid during the first study cycle of their program.

viii. Scholarship holders will be granted a single payment of one half of their monthly stipend for thesis costs or analogous requirements of their higher education institution for granting the corresponding degree, so long as their grade point average is equal to or higher than 5.5 (five point five [out of seven]) or equivalent. For these purposes scholarship holders must provide documentary proof of the aspects discussed in Clause 3, Point V of the Scholarship Granting and Acceptance Agreement, the format of which is attached hereto as Annex 2, before the end of the nineteenth (19th) month of payment by AGCI of the stipend discussed in Point IV of this section. The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program: Deadline – 31 July 2017

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program brings accomplished professionals from designated countries around the world to the United States at a mid-point in their careers for a year of practical professional development experiences and non-degree academic study.

WHO SHOULD BE APPLY:

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is designed to strengthen the leadership skills of men and woman who will make a contribution to their communities as well as their professional fields. Fellows are selected through a competitive process based on their potential for leadership and commitment to public service in the public or private sector.

Individuals should be working in either the public or private sector with demonstrated leadership ability and a commitment to the public service. Individuals should be at a point in their careers to fully benefit from this professional development program.

Candidates should understand that this program is non-degree in nature. Fellows are placed at designated host universities to take advantage of academics, professional, and leadership enhancement activities offered by the campus setting. Fellows cannot transfer from the Humphrey Program to degree status in any program. Applicants should be aware that they will not be able to become degree candidates after they arrive in the U.S.

Fellows have a commitment to return home after their Fellowship for at least two years to use the skills and knowledge they have acquired to assist their communities and their country.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
To be considered eligible to apply for the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Have a minimum of a four-year undergraduate degree from S.A. (BA + Honors)
Have a minimum of five years of full-time professional experience beyond the attainment of a first university/undergraduate degree prior to August 2018
University lecturers have to have management or policy responsibilities experience, exceptions apply to teachers of English as a foreign language and specialists in substance abuse preventions and treatment
Individuals who have attended graduate school in the United States for one academic year or more during the seven years prior to August 2018 are ineligible to apply
Individuals who have had more than six months of U.S. experience during the five years prior to August 2018 are ineligible to apply
Individuals with dual U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status are ineligible to apply.
Demonstrated Leadership Ability: candidates should have achieved positions of significant responsibility at the national, regional or local level and show clear promise to assume greater future leadership roles
A record of public service in the community: candidates careers must reflect a present and future commitment to public service, broadly defined in the public, NGO, or private sector

MEXT Scholarships for 2018: Deadline – 9 June 2017

We would like to share with you the announcement of the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japan) Scholarship for 2018.
Every year, MEXT offers scholarships to South Africans who wish to study at Japanese universities under the Japanese Government Scholarship program through the Embassy of Japan in Pretoria. It covers round-trip airfare, tuition and monthly allowance. Please note that the application forms will be available in April and the applications must reach the Embassy of Japan in South Africa by 09 June 2017.

The Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme second Call for proposals published: Deadline – 2 May 2017

The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission published on 28 January 2017 the second Call for proposals under the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme. The Agency is responsible for managing the programme in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and under the supervision of the Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development of the European Commission.

SOUTH AFRICA / OMAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH COLLABORATION: Deadline – 28 April 2017

South Africa, through the Department of Science and Technology (DST) completed and signed an agreement with the Government of the Sultanate of Oman, appointing the NRF and the Sultan Qaboos University of Oman (SQU) as implementing agencies for this partnership. Following the positive outcomes of the 2009 call for expressions of interest in joint research between South African and Omani researchers both the NRF and the SQU, with support from the science and technology Ministries of both countries, have agreed to launch this joint call in order to support, through funding, joint research projects between researchers in specific agreed upon areas of collaboration.

MASTERS SCHOLARSHIPS IN FRANCE: Deadline – 24 March 2017

The Embassy of France in invites student who wish to continue their tertiary education at Masters level in France to apply for its Bursary programme for the academic year September 2017 – 2018.

This programme forms part of the commitment between France and South Africa  to establish fruitful partnerships between their university while building a vast network of academic and professional contacts.

Students can either apply for the first year of a Master’s degree (M1) or, if they have an honours degree, the university may admit the student into the second year of a Master’s degree (M2) in order to complete their degree after one year. the duration of the grant is therefore one year, once renewable should a student originally admitted in M1 contunue with the M2 programme.
