The edition covers a wide range of topics relating to the various RIFTAL research
projects conducted by the writers that contributed to the current issue of Paradigms.
Dippenaar et al., Bangui et al. and Waghid report on the use of ICT in education. Dippenaar et al. are focusing on computer assisted language learning in Chemistry and Education. This is an important project for first year students, as they may struggle with the particular norms of writing at university, and in particular fields of study. Bangui et al. explore the use of instant messaging platforms in supporting tutorials in Engineering.

Book Chapters

Congratulations to Puleng Sefalane-Nkohla, Thembinkosi Mtonjeni,  Nosisana Mkonto and Emmanuel Esambe who all contributed to the  book Writing Centres in Higher Education: Working in and across the disciplines published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA under the SUN PReSS  in 2017.  An extract of the book can be found here.

Support Lecturers in Tutorial Development Workshop Series 2018

The Fundani CHED Student Learning Unit would like to provide support to lecturers implementing tutorials next year. As part of our attempt to have active collaborative relationships with faculty staff we will be conducting two hour workshops on the 24 January, 16 May, 15 August, and 3 October with lecturers who request tutor training in 2018. These workshops will be consecutive workshops and will follow a specific structure. We will focus on various aspects of the tutorial programme and will assist lecturers in developing a structure and programme based on your specific discipline. Your participation in these workshops are crucial and we value your discipline specific knowledge. * See also the Symposium below*.

The first workshop will take place on the 24 January.  We would like to encourage lecturers to attend this workshop before they embark on their tutorial programme.

Workshop 1:  Implementing Tutorials: Administration of tutorials, the tutorial curriculum, managing, developing and mentoring of tutors

Workshop 2:  Feedback on progress of tutorials: content and methodology,

Workshop 3:  Receive feedback from the tutors, tutoring challenges, solutions.

Workshop 4:  Reflections, Consolidations, Assessments

TAs are encouraged to attend these workshops.
