Seminar description

As the availability of tablets both for lecturers and students increases and institutions of higher learning increasingly support a BYOD (bring your own device) strategy,  the use of tablets and other mobile devices for teaching and learning becomes an exciting opportunity for lecturers. Dylan Cromhout and Linda Manashe will introduce two examples on how to use your and your students’ mobile devices for teaching and learning.

Dylan will focus on the use of tablets to record lectures:

Recording one’s lectures has a range of benefits, namely, making lectures available for students who miss class, and for those who would like to recap on the work covered. Mobile tablet devices offer lecturers the capability of recording their actual PowerPoint slides, their voice, as well as the notes they would draw on a whiteboard. Additionally, new wireless dongles allow the lecturer to show the class exactly what’s on the tablet, all while walking around the class.

Such new technologies offer lecturers a new form of flexibility inside and outside of the classroom; and by combining tablets with Blackboard, they provide effective ways of empowering  students with the resources they need to become self-motivated learners. Recording one’s lectures can also be used for flipping the classroom and other innovative pedagogic practices.

Linda will introduce another app that you can use to introduce online collaboration into your teaching. Padlet is a web 2.0 tool allows you to collate ideas and collaborate online with your learners in class.

Padlet can be used to:

  • Brainstorm ideas from a class
  • Organise research on a topic
  • Gauge understanding on a topic
  • Test student knowledge
  • Curate website links
  • Share information to an audience

Padlet is a device-agnostic tool, available on the web but also available for free as both an Android and iOS app. Use it from any device or move between several devices and still access your work. App and web versions vary slightly.

Book you place through our online booking system!

Theme: Learning Analytics in Higher Education – just another trend or sustainable strategy for supporting our learners?

Learning Analytics is currently a buzzword in Higher Education and encompasses the analysis and visualisation of big data. Current interest results from the growing access to data, the many software tools available to analyse this data and the use of data for decision making and especially for informing the design of learning interventions for students struggling with their studies. This year’s CPUT Teaching and Learning with Technology Day will feature a key note by Mr Dolf Jordaan, who will reflect on the University of Pretoria’s experience with introducing learning analytics to support their learners. He will provide an overview of current applications and uses of learning analytics and how it can help institutions of learning better support their learners. Furthermore during this event, you will be introduced to our new DVC Knowledge and Information Technology Services, Prof Louis Fourie, who will present his ICT vision for CPUT; the importance of multilingual education will be highlighted with a presentation by Dr Philip Lewis from Stellenbosch University, who uses technology to teach his medical students in isiXhosa; and Lovemore Nalube from the CPUT web office will round up the keynotes, by showcasing our own CPUT mobile app.

The day will also serve as a platform to showcase,  share, inspire, train and engage in some of the most innovative practices and experiences using technologies in teaching and learning at CPUT. Practices and experiences are not limited to the topics covered in the key notes – please come and share with your colleagues how you have innovated your teaching and learning using technology.

If you would like to present during this event, please email gachagod@cput.ac.za before Friday, the 3rd of October 2014.
