This workshop will look at the use of Google drive to support online collaboration. Google drive allows you to collect, share, create, give comments and feedback on online documents. Whether you want to go paperless and use Google drive to draft and share minutes of meetings,  coordinate inter-institutional projects, co-author research papers, give feedback to students you supervise or create simple online forms, Google drive is the tool for you!

Seminar 1: First steps towards digital publishing

Seminar description: 

eBook sales continue to rise rapidly, and the trend is only going to continue, with magazines and other publications quickly moving from print to the iPad and other tablets or mobile devices. Have you wondered about the steps involved in digital publishing ? Do you want to digitally publish and share your knowledge with a global community through Google Apps and Apple Store?  Dr Reedwaan Ismail will outline the process and procedure involved in digital publishing at this seminar. He will discuss opportunities and implications for academics wanting to publish their academic writing, text books and other content in digital format. He will discuss the steps involved in mobile publishing, the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing vs going through a publisher especially if your market is not just SA, talk about different formats of publishing and showcase examples of published content, both static and interactive.

Seminar 2: ‘Extreme knitting’, reflective writing using blogs

Seminar description: 

Participating and engaging in online communication and collaboration is one of the critical digital literacies that our students have to acquire during their studies. Social media, such as Facebook and blogs are tools that allow students to document a project, communicate this with the outside world, in the process connecting and engaging with communities beyond the classroom and the institution.

Design lecturers Mark Rautenbach and Jolanda Morkel and a group of first year students will present examples of using blogs to encourage reflective writing in studio based design projects.
