CPUT, spread the warmth

Its official – winter has hit Cape Town and it has hit hard!

And in the spirit of the CPUT Gives Back Campaign, we are calling on all staff members to spread the warmth and donate a blanket.

But before we provide you with more details on the blanket drive, we just want to convey a very BIG THANK YOU to all staff who came on board and participated in our school shoe and cat food drive.

By digging deep into your pockets, CPUT was able to put much needed school shoes on the feet of learners attending the Athlone School for the Blind (see the attached photograph).

The donation of cat food has already been distributed to the dedicated group of staff members and volunteers who are keeping our campus cats well fed.

If you did not manage to participate in the previous campaigns, don’t despair.

Go out and purchase a blanket at your local store and pop it into one of the donation boxes that is currently up in the admin areas at our various campuses.

You can also drop off your blanket at the Marketing and Communication Department office on the Bellville Campus (Administration Building, second floor).

Come on CPUT, let’s join together and spread the warmth this winter!

Have a great weekend and keep warm!

Smiles at Athlone School for the Blind

It was all smiles at the Athlone School for the Blind, thanks to CPUT staff members who donated a pair of schools shoes.

The school shoes were packaged in CPUT bags and dropped off at the school by the Marketing and Communication Department.

Situated in Bellville, the school provides education for blind and visually impaired children from some of the Western Cape’s poorest communities.

The school’s psychologist, Patricia Scheepers, thanked CPUT and says the donation of schools shoes is much needed.

A big thank you to all staff who decided to give back and make a difference in the lives of children!

Hip Hip Hooray!

From cutting the cake to singing happy birthday, the CPUT 10th birthday celebrations kicked off with a huge bang.

The official launch of the year-long birthday celebrations was recently held on the front lawn of the Bellville Campus.

The carnival themed celebrations were attended by hundreds of staff members who witnessed the official cutting of the 10th birthday cake by Vice-Chancellor Dr Prins Nevhutalu.

As part of turning 10, the Marketing and Communication Department in collaboration with faculties, units and departments will host a series of events throughout the year.

All celebrations are themed “We Are CPUT” and will proudly focus on some of the unique innovations and trends set by the institution during the past decade.

Feed our cats

Love them or hate them the cats on CPUT campuses are playing a vital role in keeping vermin under control.

A dedicated team of concerned staff have been caring for the cats by feeding, sterilizing and getting health checks on the injured or sick.

But paying for these services out of their own pockets or with limited donations has become a strain.

School Shoe Success

WOW! CPUT staff are awesome!

Thank you to all staff members who donated a pair of school shoes and for making CPUT’s first 10th birthday social responsibility drive such a huge success.

We even received some grey school pants!

Also, a big thank you to all other individuals who donated, such as friends and family members of CPUT staff members, as well as alumni.

A special thank you goes out to learners at the CBC St Johns in Parklands who donated school shoes along with their teachers, Janene Mostert and Dominque Afonso, both CPUT alumni.

#WeAreCPUT

CPUT is 10 and we want the world to know!

To mark this milestone, CPUT has embarked on a year-long birthday advertising campaign that will be featured in print, radio and online.

The campaign, which is spearheaded by the Marketing and Communication Department, drives the message #WeAreCPUT by proudly focusing on some of the unique innovations and trends set by the institution during the past decade.

The campaign is fun yet has an innovative take to it with all the lead images constructed entirely from balloons.

The concept of balloons also ties in with the birthday theme as well as the rest of the marketing and branding material that has been designed for the 10th birthday.

Balloons

For example, a fish depicts the revolutionary small-scale Modular Solar Powered Aquaponics System that was developed by Mechanical Engineering lecturer Fareed Ismail.

A cancer ribbon constructed from blue and pink balloons shows off the Omega Caro E supplement, the unique fish oil supplement developed by Prof Spinney Benade and Dr Maretha Opperman from the Functional Foods Unit.

Some of the other notable achievements and innovations that will be featured during the year-long campaign is TshepisoSAT, the Hotel School, Prof Jeanine Marnewick’s rooibos research, the research chairs, and our Service-Learning achievements.

The campaign’s two lead images are a graduation cap and the number 10, with the lead tag line, “We’re celebrating a decade of groundbreaking firsts, innovation and international acclaim. We’re proud to be at the heart of technology education and innovation in Africa,” complementing these images.

The campaign went live in January with print advertisements in local and national newspapers with the digital campaign set to roll out next month.

Hip Hip Hoorary!

On 1 January 2015 CPUT officially turns 10 and what an awesome decade it has been.

Starting from humble beginnings in 2005 when the Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon merged, today CPUT is the only University of Technology in the Western Cape and  the largest university in the region.

Over the past decade we have seen thousands of students graduate, made history by launching Africa’s first nanosatellite, rolled out new and exciting qualifications, revamped our campuses and operations and filed a number of patents.

We have so much to be proud of and to mark all our wonderful achievements, CPUT will celebrate in style with birthday celebrations planned for the entire year.

We also want to world to know. From print advertisements to radio announcements, we are going all out to spread the word on our 10th birthday.

You too can do your part in spreading the word.

It’s easy – just tag our pages and use the hash tag #WeAreCPUT to tell all your followers about our 10th birthday celebrations. And while you’re at it, join our Facebook page.
