Vision for the future

SEEING CLEARLY: Learners from Fisantekraal High School received vision screenings.

Optical Dispensing students recently volunteered their services at an outreach event at the Fisantekraal High School, which saw Grade 8 learners receiving vision screenings to identify those requiring further visual assessment.

The event was organised by OneSight – an independent international non-profit organisation, which provides vision services across the globe by bringing together the efforts of donors, partners and volunteers.

“This event formed part of OneSight’s South African Charitable Plan across the Western Cape, Gauteng and KZN, aiming to provide 1 500 patients with access to an eye exam and a pair of spectacles, if needed, in order to reduce the burden of avoidable blindness caused by refractive error,” said Angelique Hendricks, Head of CPUT’s Department of Ophthalmic Sciences.

She added that, of the nearly 200 learners screened, 84 were identified for further optometric assessment.

The donors were Luxottica and Sunglass Hut and the community partner was Won Life, an NPO operating in Fisantekraal to facilitate access to services in the areas of health and education.
