Women’s rugby team clinches USSA’s plate section

“GO TEKKIES”: The CPUT Rugby Club has won the Plate Section of the University Sports South Africa Women 7’s rugby tournament

The CPUT Rugby Club recently won the Plate Section of the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Women 7’s rugby tournament held at Wits University.

The Tekkies, as the club is affectionately known, finished in 3rd place and won the Plate section after beating neighbours UWC 31 – 10.

“I see the team growing from strength to strength and this will encourage other female students to join the club, says manager Railien Neilson.

“The team was focused and committed on the field and played with heart and soul. Their love for the game is inspiring, from ensuring ball possession to playing attacking rugby. They really carried the CPUT flag and kept our institution’s name high and we should be proud of them.”

TRENDY: The CPUT Women’s Rugby Team is growing from strength to strength and this will encourage other female students to join the club, says manager Railien Neilson.

Neilson adds that while rugby is a male-dominated sport there is a need to support transformation in sport, especially women rugby.

“We should give more exposure to women’s rugby and market the sport code more often.”

She commended the wonderful work done on the team by team coach Ivan Solomons.

Started in 2014, the club holds its practice sessions at 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the Bellville Campus.

Students can contact the Sport Offices at their respective campuses for more information.
