Heritage Day celebrated in District Six

CELEBRATIONS: CPUT staff and students joined residents of District Six in celebrating Heritage Day.

Staff members and students helped to ensure a memorable Heritage Day long weekend for the District Six community.

The two-day event on September 23 and 24, which was organised by the D6 Civic Association, included a picnic, bonfire storytelling, intercultural and indigenous games for the children, a breakfast for the elderly and a host of other activities.

Among other things, CPUT students together with the City of Cape Town’s “Come and Play” programme helped to keep the children safe by monitoring and entertaining them during the various games.

Students were provided an opportunity to reflect on their role at the event and how their contribution linked with their professional practice.

“The aim of our involvement in the Heritage Celebrations was to build and strengthen the relationships between CPUT and the District Six community through Service-Learning (SL) and Civic Engagement (CE).

Students from Management and Project Management, Sports Management Science and our International Leadership Academy (from various disciplines) sacrificed their weekend to attend and participate in the events,” said Jacqui Scheepers, Acting Director of the Centre for Community Engagement and Work Integrated Learning.

Graphic Design lecturer Cheri Hugo and her students will also continue with a project, in collaboration with the community, to design and paint a memorial graphic for the wall of the children’s park on the corner of Pontac and Roger streets, recently renamed Cissy Gool Park.

Scheepers said the SL/CE Units intend to develop this concept further with the assistance of the Service-Learning convenors and the relevant departments and units.

In a thank you letter to the University the District Six Civic Association thanked the university for their assistance in making the weekend an “absolute success”.
