Circumcision programme a success

AT YOUR SERVICE: Some of the dedicated staff members at the Bellville Campus Health Clinic.

Male students, staff members and members of the public can visit the Student Health Clinic on the Bellville Campus for medical circumcisions.

Andries Slinger, Acting Head of the Department: Student Health Clinics/HIV Unit, said the clinic had cemented ties with the Department of Health in terms of an existing service level agreement to provide voluntary medical male circumcisions (VMMC).

They have been joined by a new partner, JHPIEGO, a National Non-Governmental Organisation which is a major role player in the South African health fraternity.

“The procedures are performed at the Student Health Clinic on Bellville Campus. The clinic’s facilities have been assessed by the Department of Health and comply with the relevant legislation for the provision of quality services,” said Slinger.

The Clinic underwent an intensive assessment to be accredited as a VMMC Site.

“An average of ten patients per day are being circumcised with a high success rate with no complications received thus far,” said Slinger.
VMMC services are an extension of the National Department of Health’s Men’s Health Programme to South Africans.

The programme is managed by a team of highly qualified medical doctors and clinical nurse practitioners assisted by a complement of clinical support staff.
