Red Carnation Hotels Distribution Analyst and CPUT alumnus, Prince Ruben Chirwa encouraged Hospitality Management BTech students to be resilient in their course as there are many opportunities in the industry.
Chirwa was the guest speaker at the department’s annual BTech Conference, held at the Granger Bay Campus.
“We need more passionate, qualified hoteliers and leaders who have fresh innovative ideas, yet respect the traditions of the hospitality industry. The importance of getting a BTech qualification has a big advantage for one in industry. Very few leaders and mainly the older generation has a degree in hospitality.”
Umme-Ayman Khan, a BTech student said: “I am doing this as an extension to my diploma, to help elevate myself and gain a better understanding to further my career.” Amarachi Iwuagwu who was one of the students who presented their research at the conference said: “I felt good today as this prepares us for the industry and it encourages us to see the importance of research in our industry.”
Culinary Lecturer, Mariette Hattingh told the students: “You must enjoy and remember that today you are the most important people. You are the future hospitality industry managers.
Before he left the conference, Chirwa availed himself for mentoring and counselling to any student who needs advice or direction in the industry. In closing, Culinary Lecturer Nina Septoe, said: “It is quite good that you [students] put much effort in your research and you have chosen the relevant topics which are inspirational.”
