Seminar description
Digital stories are short, first person video-narratives created by combining recorded voice, still and moving images, and music or other sound. Digital storytelling have been used increasingly in Education to facilitate student engagement, reflection for deep learning, project-based learning, and the effective integration of technology into teaching.
Last year the Faculty of Education embarked on a pilot, in collaboration with colleagues of Fundani, to introduce digital stories in a final year professional development course for pre-service teacher students. Instead of traditional paper-based teaching portfolios half of the class decided to create digital stories. This seminar will introduce the concept of digital stories in Education and report on research that was carried out within this project on:
- Students’ and staff experiences with digital stories,
- The use of digital stories to improve digital literacy skills,
- The promotion of reflection in students, and
- Ways of using digital stories in Multicultural Education.
