Using mobile clickers at the University of Stellenbosch

Facilitator:  Marinda Van Rooyen, University of Stellenbosch

Date and time: Thursday 25th of October 2012, 14.00-16.00

Location: TBC, Bellville campus

Description: The use of clickers is on the rise in Higher Education, both internationally and locally. However, the cost of the handsets is often prohibitive for institutions to acquire larger numbers of clickers for their students, especially in resource scarce contexts, such as South African Higher Education. The University of Stellenbosch has been developing its own in-house mobile clicker system, using students’ cell phones as clicker devices, incorporated within their Learning Management System. Marinda will give a brief introduction into the theoretical background to the use of clickers to increase feedback, interaction and understanding among students, especially for large classes, and then talk about possible applications for mobile clickers in teaching and learning based on her experiences at the University of Stellenbosch. Part of this seminar will also be an exploration of some of the freely availble web-based and mobile clicker systems , such as http://www.polleverywhere.com

A discussion on the use of mobile clickers at CPUT will conclude this session.
