Seminar: Flipping the classroom

Facilitator: Anton Thiart, Civil Engineering

Date and time: 15th of August, 13.00-16.00

Location: Crit room (next to Dean’s office), Civil Engineering building, Bellville

Seminar description:

The Flipped Classroom (Inverted Classroom Method) is a student centered teaching method in which lectures are replaced/partially replaced with digital learning material. It inverts traditional teaching methods, by delivering some of teaching/lecturing online outside class and moving ‘homework’ into the classroom. The activities in the classroom are designed to engage students on a higher cognitive level and to facilitate deep learning. In this seminar, this teaching method will be explored and advantages and concerns highlighted and discussed.

Participants will also take part in a simulation of a flipped classroom and will visit the newly established multimedia studio at the department of Civil Engineering where methods and equipment for producing one’s own digital material will be showcased.
