Workshop 1: Experimenting with  Tablets in Higher Education

Facilitator: Ryna Cilliers and Veronica Barnes, FID and Gerhard Griesel, Applied Sciences
Date and time: Thursday, 16th of October 2014, 14.00-16.00
Location: Mowbray Campus

Seminar description:

CPUT has recently acquired a set of tablets to experiment with their use in the classroom. In this seminar lecturers who have experimented with tablets this year will reflect on their experiences. Veronica and Ryna introduced tablets to their Industrial Design students in a History of Arts class, while Gerhard used tablets with his ECP Horticulture students to reflect on a field trip in the form of a digital story.

Workshop 2: Academic Visibility – working towards search engines listing your publications

Facilitator: Prof Melius Weidemann, FID
Date and time: Thursday, 30th of October 2014, 14.00-15.30
Location: Cape Town Campus

Workshop description:

The use of search engines to find information has become very common, and many users rely on them to find even academic documents for their own research. Academic databases are often limited to subscription-only access, resulting in many users expecting that academic outputs are available at no cost via search engines.

Participants in this workshop will be shown how to create a network of their publications across the Internet, how to build a set of cross-links, and how to submit webpages for indexing, ultimately increasing the potential for their work to be accessible, known and cited.

Prerequisites include: familiarity with an Internet browser and with basic interpretation of search engine result pages, and access to at least three of your own research outputs (conference paper, thesis, journal article, etc).
