Seminar description:

The use of mobile devices with their connectivity capacity, combined with the power social of media, provides a resource-rich platform for innovative student-directed learning experiences. This seminar will reflect on various approaches of introducing WhatsApp to support student learning in the Western Cape. Juliana will reflect on experiences gathered in a study on the integration of Whatsapp in the School of Nursing at the Unversity of the Western Cape. Juliana introduced WhatsApp to her students for facilitating communication between students in clinical practice and their tutors. Daniela will discuss lessons learnt in a collaborative project with colleagues from the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Western Cape around the use of WhatsApp with pre-service teacher education students, dentistry students and Adult Education students. In particular WhatsApp’s capacity for bridging boundaries between formal and informal learning, between academic and social life, between the classroom and informal learning spaces, between professions and between geographical locations, proved useful in this context.
