R53m for research

DEVELOPING RESEARCH: The Research Chairs, Research Innovation Niche Area Leaders and Prestigious Award Grantees who attended a recent meeting with the Research Directorate on the Cape Town Campus

The CPUT Council has made R53m of research funding available for the next five years.

This was announced at a recent meeting of the Research Directorate, Research Chairs, Research Innovation Niche Area Leaders and Prestigious Award Grantees on the Cape Town Campus.

Prof Dina Burger, the Director of Research, initiated a discussion with the university’s Research Chairs to seek an understanding of their needs and to determine how the Research Directorate can support them going forward.

The directorate is committed to ensure excellent support and services to the Chairs under the guidance of the CPUT Chair Framework which explains how Chairs should interact with their respective faculties, said Burger.

It is expected that funded researchers contribute to research and postgrads output, research uptake and human capacity development.

Part of the monitoring and evaluation process of research grantees includes that they submit annual progress reports at specific deadlines.

Burger emphasised that this was the beginning of the consultation process regarding the needs of Chairs and the support and services that the directorate will provide to them.

She added that a follow-up consultation will take place later this month.

Researchers said the meeting was fruitful and were impressed by Burger’s commitment to their work and are looking forward to a mutual productive relationship with the directorate in the future.
