How to remove .DS_Store from Alfresco

We opened up our Alfresco instance to using Webdav, FTP, CIFS and other protocols like Sharepoint. These are good features to open as they help users easily interact with Alfresco. Unfortunately, when accessing Webdav using Mac’s ifinder as a network drive (Diagram 1), Macs put their .DS_Store files into every folder opened. This is a problem.

Alfresco suggests installing software to stop Macs from doing this, however this is not ideal.

The solution

Create a Content Rule in Alfresco to destroy the .DS_Store files.

How?

Go to Alfresco (not share), create a Content Rule under the main folder. Follow the steps:

  1. Condition: Name property matches ‘.DS_Store’
  2. Action: Destroy
  3. Title: anything eg: CPUT – Remove .DS_Store Mac files
    • Other option: Select Apply rule to sub spaces
    • Other option: Select Run rule in background

That’s it. This rule will make sure that none of the .DS_Store files ever appear on Share.
