CPUT cricket team wins USSA tournament

The CPUT cricket team, which is less than one year old, has been accepted into the Western Province Cricket Association and won the finals of the national universities’ tournament.

The team set new records in the recent University Sport South Africa (USSA) cricket B week in East London, and in the process won all eight matches with bonus points, including the final.

The tournament’s leading wicket taker was CPUT’s team captain Hlomelo Notoko and the leading runs scorer was also from CPUT, Xolile Baka.

CPUT was awarded the Team of the Tournament accolade for its sterling performance of winning all matches, something which has never happened before in the tournament’s history.

Consequently, CPUT has been promoted to the 2015 A Week league.

“Cricket South Africa did not believe the talent that the CPUT cricket team has,” says coach Jakobo Moroe.

“It was a privilege to be afforded the opportunity to work with this dynamic and talented young team, we surprised many universities as we were labeled the tournament’s underdogs. My boys really made me proud.”

Moroe thanked the team’s manager Jade Philander and the entire administration team for their support which led to the success of the team.
