Ziphozakhe Shasha, who holds a Master’s Degree in Business Information Systems  as well as his undergraduate qualifications in Tourism Management from CPUT, has clinched a full scholarship to study in China.

The Department of Higher Education and Training facilitated the awarding of the scholarship, following a rigorous selection process which included interviews and a medical examination.

“I was doing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education this year when the Chinese Scholarship Council informed me of my successful application to study towards a PhD degree in China,” says the ecstatic Shasha.

The scholarship is for the period of four years and pays for everything including accommodation, flights and local travel and subsistence costs.

STUDYING ABROAD: CPUT alumnus Ziphozakhe Shasha is studying towards a PhD degree in China after being awarded a full scholarship by the Chinese Scholarship Council

Sasha will be studying towards a PhD in Environmental Science & Engineering specialising in Climate Change and Tourism adaptation and mitigation processes at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai.

“To study abroad is a dream come true, I have always wanted to do my PhD overseas and had no specific country in mind, so this scholarship from China comes just at the right time,” he says.

He would like to be a researcher specialising in climate change and tourism; bringing solutions to the problems pertaining to climate change in South Africa.

He recently attended a ceremony held by the Chinese Embassy in South Africa to send off 29 South African students who won the Chinese government scholarships to study in China. The Chinese government have been offering scholarships to South African students since 2003.

“I would like to thank two of my CPUT lecturers who wrote recommendation letters which I included in my application, Dr Virimai Mugobo and Snyman Ohlhoff, and I promise to grab this opportunity with both hands and make South Africa proud.”
