First step in making a mobile app for CPUT Students

Earlier this year we had Student Affairs ask if we could make a mobile app for Students with shortcuts to useful CPUT information. Yes was the response.

So far we have come up with the architecture to make one app that installs on Blackberrys, Android and Apple phones (iOS).

This is an expensive adventure that can easily cost hundreds of thousands of South African Rands. So we turned to OpenSource mobile platform Phonegap.

Phonegap allows us to easily create apps with the only free open source framework that supports 7 mobile platforms. Developing with PhoneGap gives us the freedom to create mobile applications for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, Palm WebOS, Bada and Symbian using the web code we know and love: HTML, CSS and Javascript. We do love client based technologies.

Since Phonegap recently got acquired by Adobe, we felt happy that it will be supported in the long run.

We are now evaluating how Tiggzi will help us creat awesome user-friendly interfaces for this app.
