Parliament…here comes the CPUT Cats

The CPUT Cats are off to Parliament this November to meet with the Sports Portfolio committee.

The invite comes after the CPUT teams conquered the Cape Town Basketball Association League Championship.

Both teams played their final match on home ground at the Cape Town Campus. The female team beat Montana Vikings 66 – 30, while the male team defeated Montana Vikings with a smashing 68 – 48.

Team Manager, Matome Mokoena says he is proud of the team’s achievement.

“They prepared hard to get to where they are today.  Lots of blood sweat and tears.  The mandate was always to play hard and have fun while overcoming every obstacle on their way to the top, where they belong,” he says.

Mokoena also attributes the team’s success to Coach Masie Ntlali, who in 2014 took over from the legendary Coach Thierry Kita, who had laid a strong foundation.

Meanwhile, CPUT Cats ladies defeated Vikings to clinch their CTBA #BacktoBack title.

“Thanks to all the hard work and investment Coach Kimathi Toboti has put in the team,” says Mokoena.

The CPUT Cats Ladies were also awarded team of the year at the recent CPUT Sports Awards, while team member Asamkele Nongwendu clinched the female Most Valuable Player for the 2015 CTBA Championships.  Simphiwe Benge clinched the Men’s MVP award.

CPUT star runner eyes 2016 Olympics

CPUT athlete Siboniso Soldaka, who won the recent UWC 10 km Flat and Fast race, now has his sights on competing in the Olympics in Rio.

Sboniso defied pouring rain to cross the finishing line at the UWC race in just over 30 minutes, to the envy of his 1 328 competitors.

The third-year Office Management and Technology student says he was ecstatic about his victory as he did not only record his best time ever, but also outran some of the country’s top road runners such as Nkosinathi Madyo, Sibusiso Madikizela and Unathi Ntetha.

Siboniso is now preparing for two races which will see him compete with top athletes from all provinces, an experience which he hopes to use to qualify for the Olympic Games.

“I will be taking part in the Cape Town Marathon and the Gun Run, the country’s most competitive races. I hope to reduce my time to around 29 minutes,” he says.

Siboniso has been running track events and road races since 2011 and was elated when he scored a place in the Western Cape provincial athletics team two years ago.

He attributes his success mainly to CPUT Athletics Club coach, Sean Snyman, whom he says took his running to new heights.

“Before I started studying at CPUT I didn’t know the value of having a coach, but Mr Snyman made me understand it.”

The home of boxing

Boxing is one of the fastest growing sports at CPUT and the university’s club has about 50 male and female boxers.

The popularity of the sport on CPUT campuses has come with merit. In its 12 years of existence, the club has been receiving accolades and has produced two professionals.

At the beginning of this year, Fortunate Chidzivio turned professional while Mandilakhe Qavane, who went to Russia to represent the university at the World Student games, hopes to achieve the same feat next year.

The club’s manager, Vuyani Mtshikana, says the club’s popularity has even attracted boxers from outside CPUT whom it accepted into its fold.

“We are also proud to have one of the recognized coaches in the SA boxing fraternity. Thabo Makepula has been with the team since its inception and has tremendous coaching experience in amateur boxing,” he says.

The club brought home seven medals from the last University Sports South Africa (USSA) games in December when it won three gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the Witwatersrand University.

It was the club’s consistent all-round success that paved the way for Mtshikana to be elected as the national Vice-Chairman of USSA Boxing.

Training for boxers is from Monday to Thursday at 17H30 in the Gymnasium (opposite the Bellville campus Student Centre).

Sevens Rugby team takes on Paris

Team spirit and hard work, coupled with a love for rugby has earned a group of CPUT students a lifetime opportunity to play against some of the top sevens rugby teams in France.

Cats versus Alumni

The Cats Basketball team recently celebrated 20 years of existence by hosting an anniversary game between the CPUT Cats and the Alumni team.

Held at their home base at the Cape Town Campus, the Alumni teamed showed off their skills and proved that experience does pay off, winning the anniversary game.

Team Manager, Matome Mokoena says the highlight of the game was when both teams handed a Cats basketball jersey, which they signed, to the teams’ legendary coach Thierry Kita.

Kita coached the team for several years and is now the Associate Director of Basketball Operations for NBA Africa.

Mokoena says the Cats team is currently competing in the USSA Western Cape Championships and so far has remained unbeaten.

The team has their sights set on securing a place in the USSA National Championships that will be held in Durban later this year.

Last year the male team finished second, while the female team finished third in the country

CPUT cricket team wins USSA tournament

The CPUT cricket team, which is less than one year old, has been accepted into the Western Province Cricket Association and won the finals of the national universities’ tournament.

The team set new records in the recent University Sport South Africa (USSA) cricket B week in East London, and in the process won all eight matches with bonus points, including the final.

The tournament’s leading wicket taker was CPUT’s team captain Hlomelo Notoko and the leading runs scorer was also from CPUT, Xolile Baka.

CPUT was awarded the Team of the Tournament accolade for its sterling performance of winning all matches, something which has never happened before in the tournament’s history.

Consequently, CPUT has been promoted to the 2015 A Week league.

“Cricket South Africa did not believe the talent that the CPUT cricket team has,” says coach Jakobo Moroe.

“It was a privilege to be afforded the opportunity to work with this dynamic and talented young team, we surprised many universities as we were labeled the tournament’s underdogs. My boys really made me proud.”

Moroe thanked the team’s manager Jade Philander and the entire administration team for their support which led to the success of the team.

Paralympian sport launched at CPUT

A new paralympian sport has just been launched in Cape Town and they are looking for CPUT students who want to play.

Sitting Volleyball can be played by both the able bodied and disabled and is a version of volleyball using a smaller court and lowered net. During a game players are seated on the ground and slide using their arms to move and play the ball. Teams have six players

At the moment both UCT and Stellenbosch have launched the game and CPUT can join the fold and be trained by British Paralympic athlete Anton Raimondo who brought the sport to SA.

Raimondo lost his lower left leg in a motorcycle accident years ago and after rehabilitation treatment he joined to sport to stay active. He quickly rose through the ranks to vice-captain for Great Britain in the 2012 Paralympics.

Now he and his wife Tina are hoping to offer local students a similar experience.

“It is one of the few sports where people missing a leg have an advantage over those with both legs as it is easier to move around!” says Raimondo.

Sport Advocates

It’s game on for a group of students who have been selected to be part of the 2015 Wellington Campus Sports Forum.

Launched in 2012, the forum’s key goal is to facilitate sporting activities at the campus. It is also a one-stop-shop for all students’ sport related enquiries, complaints and comments.

This year’s chairperson is Conrad Du Plessis, a fourth year Education student and manager of the Wellington Campus rugby club.

Conrad says they are looking forward to working together with all the sport clubs.

He says each sport club was tasked with coming up for a vision for the year and that with the assistance of the forum, they hope to realise the goals that have been set.

Promote

Sports Forum member, Maud-Mari Wagner says the forum has proved its worth over the past few years, with more students participating in sport and additional clubs being launched.

The campus boasts 12 sporting clubs, with rugby, netball and hockey being the top three clubs. The campus also boast the university’s only adventure club, which sees students participate in activities that range from river rafting to abseiling.

Francois Du Plessis, who is responsible for the forum’s marketing and public relations, says while their main aim is to promote sports on the campus, they hope to also inspire students on the other campuses to adopt a similar structure.

“We would really like to see sport forums on all the campuses and to establish a central sports forum,” says Francois.
