Unpacking HIV Curriculum Integration

THE WAY FORWARD: The integration of HIV training and education into the CPUT curriculum was discussed in detail at a recent breakaway

The integration of HIV training and education into the CPUT curriculum was discussed in detail at a recent breakaway.

CPUT academics from various faculties converged at the Cape Pillars Boutique Guesthouse to discuss HIV Curriculum Integration, its implementation challenges and the way forward.

Senior Programme Manager: Curriculum Development and Research at Higher Education AIDS Managa Pillay emphasised the importance of developing competency amongst graduates and academics.

The dialogue kicked off with an introduction by Prof Anthony Staak, DVC: Learning and Teaching who told participants that the ability to deal with HIV/Aids in the workplace was facing everyone.

“It is important to pull all our efforts together to equip our graduates well enough to deal with HIV in their workplaces,” said Staak.

He added that the HIV/Aids Unit is there to facilitate the process, but academics will eventually be responsible for HIV Curriculum integration.

After the dialogue Gloria Maaka-Tlokana, Director: Development Support at the Department Higher Education and Training, said it was fulfilling to engage with the team.

“It was really encouraging to also see the enthusiasm and commitment from the lecturers and there is no doubt that the project has been fully embraced.”

“A number of discussions and future meetings are on the cards and we look forward to more collaboration on this very important issue, says Melanie Marais, HIV/Aids Unit Head.
