Primary Health Care achieves superlative pass rate

OVERACHIEVERS: The 2017 Primary Health Care Team

The Primary Health Care (PHC) division within the Department of Nursing Sciences overshot its target of a 95% pass rate when 98% of its students passed despite disruptions caused by their protesting peers.

“Despite personal as well as institutional challenges our students and staff stayed committed and this great result is the fruit of their labour. I want to commend them for the diligence and dedication,” says Yolando Samuels, a specialised clinical skills coordinator in the PHC team.

Another highlight of the year was the collaboration with the Wound Healing Association of South Africa to host two workshops, in response to the World Health Organisation’s call for improved wound care in South Africa.

This year also saw PHC collaborating with other departments in the Health and Wellness Sciences Faculty to enhance students’ clinical experience. They had a three-day basic life-support training with the Emergency Medical Services Department. “Radiography also came on-board to assist the students to read X-Rays as well as the indications and preparation of a patient who needs X-Rays,” adds Samuels.
