You are invited to attend a workshop on the teaching opportunities afforded by Open Educational Resources (OER) in South Africa. Emerging from the global “open” initiatives. OER are growing in importance as mechanisms for enhancing the quality of our teaching, especially in the Global South. This workshop will include an introduction to OER, where to find OER and a basic introduction to Creative Commons licensing. The quality of OER is a complex issue with various opinions about how to go about managing quality and some time will be spent outlining these debates and discussing them.

Key aspects that will be covered:

  • the open educational movement
  • strategies for openness
  • opportunities and barriers to using or creating OER
  • online platforms for finding and depositing OER
  • copyright issues and alternative licensing of teaching materials
  • quality and OER
