The Western Cape’s top science leaners recently went head to head at the annual provincial Minquiz competition that was hosted at CPUT by the Chemical Engineering Department.

An initiative of the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) the competition is regarded as South Africa’s premier annual national Science competition for Grade 12 learners.

The event’s organiser Stephen Wanliss, Technical Officer in the Chemical Engineering Department, says all schools were invited and requested to select the top three performers’ in science and maths.

Students completed a written test and based on their results went on to the next round, which was a grueling oral exam.

This year learners from the Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology, Settlers High School, Rondebosch Boy’s High School and Bishops will make their way to the national competition.

Assistant Dean in the Engineering Faculty Prof Marshall Sheldon says they are honoured to once again host the event.

The event rotates each year at the various universities and saw CPUT welcome the schools in 2012.

Sheldon says part of CPUT’s duty as a higher education institution is to encourage interest in careers in science, engineering and technology.

She says the Minquiz competition is the perfect platform to get learners thinking about their future study options.
