Student leaders from various student structures and CPUT campuses benefitted from a week of Skills Building Training where they learnt a variety of skills including first aid, leadership and capacity building.

This training programme, a first of its kind, saw a total of 100 student leaders, including leaders of general student structures, Residence Assistants and SRCs, engaging with one another.

The programme was a collaborative effort from various CPUT departments, including the Department of Student Affairs, Student Housing and the Safety, Health and Environment Office.

The students received the following:

Fire Marshall Training, which took place at the Ottery Youth and Education Centre over one day and was facilitated by the South African Fire and Medical Academy;

First Aid Training, which took place on Bellville campus over two days, and was facilitated by IMPACT Safety Training Development and;

Leadership Training & Capacity Building, which took place on Bellville Campus and was facilitated by Indibano Training Consultants.

“The hope is that student leaders across the various platforms will be equipped with the necessary tools and skills to be able to address the challenges they face whilst in leadership, and to boost their employability,” says Melani-Ann Hara, a Student Development Officer.

Acting Vice-chancellor, Dr Chris Nhlapho, said he appreciated the leaders’ willingness to serve fellow students and that the skills imparted to them in the week will help them a great deal later in their lives.

Adv Lionel Harper, Acting Head of Student Governance, said he was glad that the students found the training worthwhile and fruitful.
