PR students ensure happy feet at matric ball

SHOE SUCCESS: The Her Majesty Project collected 50 pairs of shoes for learners at Zola Secondary School.

A group of BTech Public Relations students helped to ensure that Grade 12 learners at a Khayelitsha school had a ball at their matric farewell. The students launched a campaign called Her Majesty and through donations from the public and the CPUT community managed to collect about 50 pairs of high-heeled shoes for matric girls at Zola Secondary School to wear to their ball.

Student Nadine Dirks said they had been tasked with coming up with a practical campaign for their finals and this cause was something they all relate to.

The campaign formed part of the larger Restoring Soles 2 Souls project, which collects and redistributes new and gently-worn shoes to impoverished communities in South Africa.

The shoes were handed over on 20 September.

“It was wonderful. The girls were so happy, some even cried. It was an emotional experience for all of us because we had worked incredibly hard trying to get the shoes together. We exceeded our own expectations with the shoes we got,” said Dirks.
