Meet Etienne Joubert

Yet again, CPUT alumnus and lecturer in the School of Sport, Events, Tourism and Hospitality, Etienne Joubert, will be leading CPUT’s rider efforts in the toughest mountain bike race in the world, the Absa Cape Epic.

Along with his race partner, Sarita Louw, he’s spent months training for the event and as the countdown to the race begins, Etienne says his excitement is mounting. He’ll be riding in the ‘mixed’ category of the race (male and female team) and will be proudly sporting CPUT colours as part of Team CPUT.

“Although this is undoubtedly the toughest mountain bike stage in the world, the exhilaration and thrill of competing is something that all serious cycling enthusiasts should experience.”

This is Etienne’s fifth time he will be riding in the Epic, having competed in the event in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2014. He says the race is not just about stamina, but about strategy as well as good communication with your race partner. For Etienne, who has held national colours in various sporting codes, mountain biking is second nature.

“What draws people to mountain biking is the outdoors. In road cycling you are in the urban areas, whereas with mountain biking you are in nature and the scenery we ride through is unbelievably beautiful.”
