Checklist for New Students

Before you arrive: When? Completed
Declare your disability on the application form When you apply to the university.
Do not forget to indicate about accommodation on the application form. When you apply to the university.
Meet with the DU staff to discuss your situation as early as possible. When you apply to the university.
When you register: When? Completed
Apply for the disability NSFAS bursary When you register at the university.
Attend the orientation programmes on your campus. During welcome and orientation week.
Make sure that you meet with the DU staff if you did not do so before. When you register at the university.
Administrative measures: When? Completed
Meet with the DU staff to discuss any support requirements, including exam arrangements you may require. As soon as possible.
What to bring with to the meeting to support your request:

  • Formal evidence of your previous support.
  • Any doctor’s reports.
As soon as possible.  
Check whether you need to apply for assistance e.g. a scribe or extra time letter, for every exam period.  As soon as possible.

  1. Altus, student number 214014460, registered for Three Dimensional Design and at school he had extra time for exams and projects. We’ve got a report from the Pshycologist stating that he has to have extra time. Where to we apply for the extra time and how does it work? It was ticked off on his registration papers.
