SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDIES IN CHINA & HUNGARY

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) would like to inform you that applications for the Chinese Government Scholarship and the Hungarian Government Scholarship are now open. It would be appreciated if you could information about these opportunities with your students and staff. More information is attached and can also be viewed on our website: www.internationalscholarships.dhet.gov.za.

The focus for all our international scholarship programmes is on postgraduate studies although there are a limited number of opportunities for undergraduate studies available.

Chinese Government scholarship

The DHET is facilitating applications for the Chinese Government Scholarship for South Africans to study in China. Opportunities are available at Master’s, PhD and post-doc levels as well as for Chinese language studies. Bachelor’s degree applicants must be fluent in Chinese as all Bachelor’s level courses under this scholarship programme are taught in Chinese. All applicants must apply directly to their university of choice in China as well as submit an application from to the DHET, along with all supporting documents.

Hungarian Government Scholarship

The South African Government has entered into an agreement with the Government of Hungary on cooperation in the field of higher education and training. The Ministry of Human capacities of Hungary offers 100 scholarship per annum to South Africans through the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme.

The Hungarian scholarship provides support for full-time study for Bachelor’s and Doctoral degrees in Hungary in identified fields. Most of the courses available are taught in English. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses and medical insurance. Interested and eligible applicants must apply inline as well as submit an application form to the DHET.

The Department increasingly seeks to position the international scholarships that become available as opportunities for developing capacity in the higher education sector. We would thus like to promote the uptake of these scholarships by junior academic who still need to embark on masters or doctoral studies, and by senior postgraduate students who are aspiring towards a career in academia.

Impala Training Week on internationalisation of Higher Education

Impala is an Erasmus+ KA2  Capacity Building project which focuses on internationalisation strategies in South Africa institutions. From 20 to 24 March 2017, a training week for South African higher education professionals will be organized.

The Impala Project is looking for trainers (EU and SA) in the following themes:

  • Internationalisation of the curriculum
  • Short-term programmes and summer schools
  • Project writing and management
  • Mobility toolkit

Requirements:

Only staff members from Impala partner universities can apply. Travel costs, accommodation costs and remuneration for performances will be covered according to the official unit costs.

How to apply:

Send your theme of preference, identifying the specific topics you will cover, a motivation letter and your CV to impalasa@uantwerpen.be. The final selection of trainers, in view of focus and coherence of the programme, will be done by the IMPALA Steering Committee Meeting.

2017 Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders (SUSI) Call for applications: Deadline – 05 October 2016

The 2017 Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders (SUSI) will focus on Civic Engagement and will host students from the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe.

The Study of the U.S. Institute on Civic Engagement provides student leaders with an overview of how citizens have shaped U.S. history, government, and society both as individuals and groups.  The coursework examines the development of civic engagement in the U.S. and explores topics such as citizenship, community building, economic development, grassroots activism, political leadership, and volunteerism.  Other topics such as civil rights, entrepreneurship, ethics, and leadership are discussed.  In addition to classroom sessions, participants will meet with community leaders, entrepreneurs, and representatives of non-profit organizations.  The academic sessions are complemented by workshops designed to build practical skills and a study tour that allows participants to broaden their understanding of citizen engagement across the United States.

 Eligibility for SUSI

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 25 and have at least one semester left of college or university
  • Demonstrate leadership through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English
  • Have little or no prior travel or study experience in the United States
  • Not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Eligible to receive a United States J-1 Visa
