First Year Experience Conference a resounding success

The First Year Experience (FYE) Committee from the Faculty of Education on the Wellington Campus recently held an end-of year conference for its 2017 mentors and retention officers.

The conference was attended by Dr Nosisana Mkonto (Head of FYE at CPUT), Dr Lawrence Meda, the education faculty’s Teaching and Learning Coordinator and lecturers Dr Vincent Bosman, Lu-Ann Kearns, and Dr Hanlie Dippenaar.

During the event Bosman led a feedback session in which the all the retention officers, lecturers and mentors reflected on the past year.

The mentors also participated in an interactive workshop session and brainstormed ideas for next year’s programme.

Subsequent to the conference, a year-end function was held for all first year students and their mentors.

At the event, the students participated in a competition in which they celebrated their different heritages through song, dance and poetry.

The evening was concluded with dancing and a three-course meal, partly sponsored by Silver Spoon caterers.

“This was the first event of its kind to be held in Wellington and certainly paves the way for similar events,” says Dippenaar.

The FYE initiative has been running for the past three years at CPUT and has been growing from strength to strength.

New mentors were trained in October and a planning session for 2018 was held a week later.

The new retention officers for the Wellington campus have been appointed and are Corne Conradie, Dalvyn Marthinus, Chad Morrie and Louwna Botha.

“The Wellington FYE mentors will be ready to welcome all new first years arriving in Wellington in 2018. We look forward to meeting our new first years and to continue the valuable work of the FYE initiative,” adds Dippenaar.
